The Old Rectory at Oxborough is set in idyllic, slightly unkempt grounds with glorious views across fields. Afternoon tea with home-made cake was served on the patio upon arrival and set the scene for a very relaxed, comfortable and peaceful stay. We later enjoyed exploring the garden and admiring several large and very old trees, including a huge Copper Beech, the ruins of a 10th Century chapel and roses galore rambling over several large pergolas, and a very green swimming pool that looked rather more akin to a wildlife pond (you certainly wouldn’t want to take a dip!). My travelling companion was in the Courtenay Room overlooking the chapel ruins, whilst I was in the Earl’s Room in the adjacent converted stable block (because I had my dog with me, so outdoor access was easier). Roses from the garden added a quintessentially English touch to our very spacious and elegantly furnished rooms. Courtenay's en-suite was approached via a small flight of stairs and the double power shower a delight. Earl’s en-suite had a bath only. Breakfast on both mornings of our stay was delicious. My companion found our hostess affable and communicative, but it was all she could do to speak to me, leaving me feeling rather frozen out. I detected a degree of snobbishness in our hostess, giving the impression that she was of the opinion that we were socially inferior. Whether we were ought to be immaterial if one advertises bed and breakfast accommodation and are happy to relieve your paying guests of £90ppn. I really don’t think it unreasonable to anticipate that one’s host in such circumstances will be friendly, or that the bedlinen in both our rooms would be ironed before the beds were made up. In summary the setting and accommodation at The Old Rectory is second to none but the hospitality and attention to detail left a lot to be desired. Oh, and one final point, the owner’s website currently infers that you can see fabulous Oxborough Hall (National Trust) from the property: you cannot! Would we stay there again? I’m afraid not. The shabbiness might be overlooked but the owner’s attitude left a great deal to be desired.
